I
had a wonderful kindergarten experience at Concord Elementary School in St. Louis County, 1959-60. We had a room with huge windows, looking out onto a playground with huge trees, where I spotted my first
red-headed woodpecker. There was tons of free paper, allowing me to draw to my
heart's content. A science center. We sang "Frosty the Snowman" as Mrs. Hemmens, with her pixie cut, played the piano. There were lots of
smooth wooden blocks, but one day we couldn't play with them ,
because the afternoon class was constructing a "city." And then there was the soft pink
paperback "Before We Read" workbook...
