The Apocalypse in a Single Painting

Fascinating! Below is a detail from the right wing Hans Memling's St. John’s Altarpiece (Altarpiece of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist) (1474-1479) Memling Museum, St. John’s Hospital, Bruges. I love the radiating rainbows!

The right wing shows John the Evangelist writing the Apocalypse on the island of Patmos, with the key events of the Book of Revelation depicted. Experts believe this is the first time that the entire Apocalypse story was presented in a single painting. Two concentric rainbows show God enthroned, with four beasts and 24 elders, while the Lamb of God breaks the seven seals on God’s lap (third image). https://beckchris.wordpress.com/visual-arts/best-works-of-art-of-all-time-the-critics-picks/
