"Argument
itself, especially if it is spirited or passionate, is viewed with more
suspicion in our psychologically dominated age. People are more
inclined to psychoanalyze a person than analyze his argument, partly
because they often have little sense of how to advance or assess an
argument. They are often more concerned with whether the person is nice
or likeable than with whether his claims are coherent. Of course, one
can be both coherent and likeable, which is no doubt preferable to
choosing between the two."
