Why Evangelicals Resist Self- Criticism

Sometimes I wonder what it would have been like if FB had been around when the prophets were doing their thing in Israel and Judah. Would there have been people criticizing them, saying they should mind their own business, and even take a good hard look at themselves? Oh yeah, I remember now.... 😉

In a world where individuals are the only reality, it is natural for us to emphasize the critical task of self-reflection. But if we are not merely individuals, but persons--that is, individuals-in-relationship--then we must not stop there. We must also examine the systems and communities that we are part of. It is fascinating (but not surprising, given our nominalist DNA) how evangelicals have balked at that task.

What Does It Mean To Be Prophetic Today?

Brueggemann: Well, I think we have to learn how to do social analysis better. We have to learn how to follow the money. We have to learn how to follow the money to see where it creates hurt. And white people at least, are not very good at social analysis, and do not want to be. And the other thing that I want to say to people in my tradition is, you’ve got to trust the biblical text. The biblical text is a huge truth speaker and a hope speaker. And, we can rely on it and I don't think we do very well at either one of those tasks.>
