Musing about Theological Virtues and the Trinity
Before you can have faith, there must be Truth.
Before you can have faith, there must be Love.
Without Truth, what is there to believe in?
Without Love, what is the point of trusting?
There is a difference between being optimistic and being hopeful.
Optimism isn't grounded in faith, or it is grounded in something which isn't the Truth.
Hope is anchored in faith; and faith is grounded in truth. Hope is a reaching toward that which is desired. Its fulfilment is Love.
How to have faith in a postmodern world where there is no Truth? Some think that evangelism can be done by sidestepping truth, and talking about "passion." Passion is a necessary, but not sufficient condition for love. It is the temptation of pietism to move toward a faith without truth. It is the temptation of scholasticism to move toward a faith without love.
God is Love.
Jesus is the Truth.
Isn't that strange. So often we think of Jesus as Love and God as the dispenser of Truth. What is scripture trying to tell us when it describes these two Persons in such a counterintuitive way?
